Founded in 2012 by Hj. Eti Sumiati, Wanoja—meaning "woman" in Sundanese—began as a small group of female coffee farmers with a mission to improve the livelihoods of local communities through exceptional coffee. Today, Wanoja is widely recognised as one of Indonesia's most respected producers, known not only for their commitment to quality but also for their efforts in reforestation and sustainable farming.

This coffee is processed using the Black Honey method, a rare process in Indonesia where much of the fruit's sticky mucilage is left on the bean during drying. The extended contact between the bean and its natural sugars creates greater sweetness, complexity, and depth in the cup while preserving clarity. As our first Honey-processed coffee, this lot offers a unique expression of Indonesian coffee that is seldom seen.

Roasted very light for filter brewing, Wanoja Longan Tea is delicate yet deeply sweet, combining notes of longan, dark honey, and jasmine. The cup is light, fresh, and tea-like, with a gentle floral aroma and a lingering honeyed sweetness that carries through to the finish.

Roasting

We roast our filter coffees light and our espresso coffees medium-light to showcase the unique character of each coffee.

Our philosophy is simple: light, but well developed - preserving origin flavours while bringing out sweetness, balance, and the coffee's full flavour potential.

Grinding

We grind all of our coffee on the Lagom 01, widely regarded as one of the highest-clarity coffee grinders available today.

Kopi Tubruk Grind

Our Kopi Tubruk grind is a coarse grind designed for the traditional Indonesian brewing method, Kopi Tubruk. Simple, accessible, and requiring minimal equipment, it's one of the easiest ways to enjoy specialty coffee at home.

To brew, simply add 15g of coffee to 225g of hot water (1:15 ratio), allow it to steep for 4 minutes, then remove any excess floating grounds before drinking. That's it.

Why we chose this coffee

Honey processing has always fascinated us. Despite the name, no actual honey is involved. Instead, it sits somewhere between natural and washed processing: naturals are dried inside the whole cherry, while washed coffees have the fruit removed before drying. With honey processing, the skin is removed but a layer of the sticky, sugar-rich mucilage is left on the bean as it dries.

In theory, honey processing can bring together the sweetness and fruit character of a natural with the clarity of a washed coffee. In our experience, however, it can be difficult to achieve that balance. Some honey coffees can lack the fruit intensity of a natural while also losing the clean, transparent character we look for in a washed coffee.

That’s why we rarely come across a Honey Process coffee that we genuinely love. This Black Honey from Wanoja was different. With most of the mucilage retained during a much slower drying process, it develops a deep, sweet umami character while remaining remarkably light and fresh on the tongue.

This is our first time showcasing a Honey Process coffee, and we wanted to share something we consider genuinely unusual: a rare style of processing from Indonesia that offers an experience quite different from the naturals and washed coffees we usually feature.

Origin Story

Wanoja

Wanoja is one of Indonesia’s most respected coffee producers, founded in 2012 by Hj. Eti Sumiati in the highlands of West Java. Meaning “woman” in Sundanese, Wanoja began as a small collective of female coffee farmers with a vision to create lasting social and environmental impact through coffee. Over the years, that vision has grown into a model for sustainable coffee production, empowering local farming communities while restoring and protecting the surrounding landscape.

What sets Wanoja apart is their belief that great coffee and environmental stewardship go hand in hand. Through large-scale reforestation, soil conservation, organic farming practices, and a zero-waste approach to production, they have helped rehabilitate degraded land in Kamojang while reducing erosion and flood risk. Their work has transformed former agricultural land into a thriving coffee-growing ecosystem, proving that specialty coffee can be a force for long-term environmental restoration.

Their commitment to quality has earned international recognition. Wanoja achieved an extraordinary result in Indonesia’s inaugural Cup of Excellence, placing 2nd and 5th overall against the country's best coffees. They have continued to build on this success, establishing a reputation for producing some of the most sought-after coffees in Indonesia while showcasing the potential of West Java on the world stage.
