Built around a blueberry co-fermented lot from Simalem Organic Farm in Karo, North Sumatra, this blend showcases a side of Indonesian coffee rarely seen outside the country. Through co-fermentation with blueberry, the coffee develops vibrant berry sweetness, lifted fruit aromatics and a playful bubblegum character that sets it apart from traditional espresso profiles.

To create a more balanced and versatile cup, we paired it with a washed coffee produced by Yolan Tirta in Sulawesi. The result is a lighter espresso blend that retains the excitement of co-fermentation while delivering the structure and clarity needed for everyday drinking.

As a black coffee, expect notes of blueberry, blackcurrant and bubblegum with a silky body and lingering sweetness. With milk, the fruit character becomes softer and more integrated, reminiscent of blueberry muffin, berry yoghurt and sweet cream.

Designed specifically for milk-based drinks, Blueberry Muffin offers a fresh perspective on Indonesian espresso.

Why we chose this coffee

As the first Australian roaster to showcase this Indonesian blueberry co-ferment blend, we wanted to highlight a side of Indonesian coffee that few people have experienced.

When people think of fruit-forward co-ferments, they often look to coffees from Latin America. Yet producers across Indonesia are also exploring innovative processing methods that are redefining what Indonesian coffee can taste like.

What excited us about this coffee was not just its vibrant blueberry character, but how naturally it worked as an espresso blend.

Rather than creating an intense co-ferment designed purely for novelty, we wanted to build a coffee that would shine in milk while remaining balanced and approachable. By pairing the blueberry co-ferment with a washed Sulawesi coffee, we were able to preserve the fruit character while creating a sweeter, more structured cup.

The result is intentionally playful. Blueberry, blackcurrant and bubblegum notes sit alongside the familiar comfort of a well-crafted milk coffee, creating something both distinctive and easy to enjoy.

For us, Blueberry Muffin represents a different vision of Indonesian espresso—innovative, approachable and designed to be enjoyed every day.

Origin Story

The Producers

Blueberry Muffin brings together two producers helping shape the future of Indonesian specialty coffee.

The co-fermented component comes from Simalem Organic Farm in Karo, North Sumatra. Situated approximately three hours from Medan, the farm spans four hectares and operates under certified organic practices, cultivating coffee alongside tea and other crops within a diverse agricultural ecosystem.

Led by Johan Kwe, Indonesia's only Q Processing Professional, Simalem has become recognised for pushing the boundaries of coffee processing while maintaining a strong commitment to quality and traceability. Their blueberry co-fermentation highlights the potential of modern Indonesian processing, creating expressive fruit character while preserving clarity and balance in the cup.

To complement this vibrant profile, we paired it with a washed coffee produced by Yolan Tirta in Panaikang, South Sulawesi.

A third-generation producer, Yolan established his mill in 2016 with a vision to elevate Sulawesi coffee through precision and infrastructure. Working alongside neighbouring farmers, he has invested in mini mills, drying stations and quality-focused processing systems that allow producers across the region to consistently achieve specialty-grade standards.

Together, these coffees represent two complementary approaches to quality. One driven by processing innovation, the other by agronomy, infrastructure and regional development. The result is a blend that celebrates both the future and foundations of Indonesian coffee.
