Meet a different side of Sumatran coffee. Asman Gembira is a naturally processed coffee with an elegant fruitiness and a smooth, creamy body. As an espresso, its gentle fruit character shines through, while pairing it with milk brings out a rounder, creamier sweetness.

Gembira means “happiness” in Indonesian, and the name takes inspiration from Soda Gembira, a nostalgic Indonesian fizzy drink known for its fruity sweetness. We thought it was a fitting name for a coffee that brings a little joy to the cup.

Produced at the renowned Asman Gayo Mill, this coffee reflects the care and precision of the farmers and producers behind it. A beautiful expression of Gayo’s potential, Asman Gembira showcases the delicate, fruit-forward side of naturally processed Sumatran coffee.

Roasting

We roast our filter coffees light and our espresso coffees medium-light to showcase the unique character of each coffee.

Our philosophy is simple: light, but well developed - preserving origin flavours while bringing out sweetness, balance, and the coffee's full flavour potential.

Grinding

We grind all of our coffee on the Lagom 01, widely regarded as one of the highest-clarity coffee grinders available today.

Kopi Tubruk Grind

Our Kopi Tubruk grind is a coarse grind designed for the traditional Indonesian brewing method, Kopi Tubruk. Simple, accessible, and requiring minimal equipment, it's one of the easiest ways to enjoy specialty coffee at home.

To brew, simply add 15g of coffee to 225g of hot water (1:15 ratio), allow it to steep for 4 minutes, then remove any excess floating grounds before drinking. That's it.

Why we chose this coffee

This coffee showcases just how far Sumatran specialty coffee can go. Produced by one of the region's most respected coffee operations, it reflects a shared obsession with quality, from the farmers growing the cherries to the team carefully processing them.

Natural processing is deceptively difficult. With the fruit left intact during drying, fermentation can be challenging to control, and achieving a clean, consistent cup takes considerable care and experience. This lot is a testament to that dedication: an elegant, fruit-forward coffee with a creamy body that highlights both the character of Sumatra and the skill of the people behind it.

Origin Story

Asman Gayo Mill

The Asman Gayo Mill was established by Asman Arianto, a producer driven by the ambition to elevate Indonesian coffee while creating better opportunities for local farming communities. Through the Ribang Gayo Musara Cooperative, he works with smallholder farmers from the Pantan Musara villages, many of whom rebuilt their livelihoods after being displaced by natural disasters.

Their commitment to quality has earned international recognition, with farmers from the cooperative winning Indonesia's Cup of Excellence in both 2021 and 2022. Beyond producing exceptional coffee, the mill supports a community built around shared knowledge, careful processing, and a belief in the potential of Indonesian coffee.
