Story

Karana

Karana is the collaboration of two like-minded coffee professionals sharing a passion for great Specialty Coffee: Rodney Glick, from Australia, and I Kadek Edi from Indonesia.

The Karana community is a collective of 377 smallholder farmers in the Kintamani region of Bali, Indonesia, united by a commitment to sustainability and quality. Central to their approach is environmentally conscious farming: farmers utilize composting, avoid chemical sprays, and plant appropriate overstory trees to maintain ecological balance. Rooted in Balinese village life yet connected to the global coffee market, Karana is dedicated to quality from farm to cup.

In 2021, at Indonesia’s first Cup of Excellence, Karana achieved the highest-scoring coffee from Bali and ranked among the top 20 coffees overall, highlighting their commitment to excellence.

The Karana community’s vision is to be a trusted supplier of green coffee beans for both domestic and international markets. By blending cultural tradition, sustainable practices, and community-driven innovation, Karana coffee embodies the vibrant heritage and unique character of the Kintamani region.

Origin

Bali

Bali is a region that needs no introduction. Known as the “Island of the Gods,” it is steeped in cultural heritage and renowned for its extraordinary natural beauty. The island is a hotspot of marine biodiversity, home to vibrant coral reefs and diverse marine life. Its dramatic landscapes span iconic beaches, lush rainforests, volcanic peaks, and fertile highlands, creating a backdrop as breathtaking as it is varied.

Amid these picturesque vistas lie the coffee-growing highlands of Kintamani, where farmers cultivate coffee organically, guided by respect for the land rather than formal certification. The local Subak Abian cooperative embraces the Hindu philosophy of Tri Hita Karana, which teaches that true happiness comes from harmony with God, community, and nature. This guiding principle informs sustainable farming practices that protect the land, preserve biodiversity, and yield coffee intimately connected to Bali’s ecological richness and natural heritage.
